Romanian PM Claims Government Works Better Without PSD Ministers

(MENAFN) Romania’s Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said Tuesday that he intends to remain in office despite the Social Democratic Party’s decision to withdraw its political backing, arguing that the government will operate more effectively without PSD ministers.

In an interview, Bolojan accused the PSD of adopting what he called an “opposition within power” stance once administrative reforms and spending-cut measures were introduced.

His comments follow a party vote on Monday in which the PSD decided to pull its support for the government, a move that has heightened political uncertainty and raised the risk of instability within the ruling coalition.

“When we moved on to administrative reform, to measures to reduce expenses, everything was already going with the handbrake on and the PSD as a party began an opposition policy within the government,” said Bolojan.

He further criticized the party for avoiding responsibility for jointly agreed decisions, saying it was “running away from responsibility and constantly lying.”

When asked whether he would resign if President Nicusor Dan requested it to prevent a political crisis, Bolojan said he had already informed the president that he would stay in his position.

“We will see in the coming days what will happen, because it is a complicated situation, with a fragmented parliament, in which it is difficult to form majorities, because some people condition others,” he added.

The dispute comes amid growing tensions within Romania’s governing coalition, with concerns over legislative stability and the ability to pass reforms in a divided parliament.
