Romanian PM Refuses to Step Down After Coalition Split with PSD
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said in an interview with Romanian broadcaster Pro TV that the government would function more effectively without PSD ministers, following the party’s decision to pull its backing after an internal vote held on Monday.
He accused the PSD of shifting toward what he described as an “opposition within power” once administrative reforms and cost-cutting measures were introduced. “When we moved on to administrative reform, to measures to reduce expenses, everything was already going with the handbrake on and the PSD as a party began an opposition policy within the government,” he said.
Bolojan also criticized the party for avoiding responsibility, claiming that “they are running away from responsibility and constantly lying,” while insisting that earlier decisions had been made through mutual agreement.
When asked whether he would resign if President Nicușor Dan requested it in order to prevent a political crisis, Bolojan said he would remain in his position. He added that he had already informed the president of his decision not to step down.
“We will see in the coming days what will happen, because it is a complicated situation, with a fragmented parliament, in which it is difficult to form majorities, because some people condition others,” he said.
The developments come amid growing political tension in Romania following the PSD’s withdrawal of support, raising questions about government stability and future parliamentary cooperation.
