Romanian leader says US under Trump prioritizes economics over morals

(MENAFN) Romania’s President Nicusor Dan has warned that the transatlantic alliance is adapting to a new reality under US President Donald Trump, in which economic and strategic considerations are taking precedence over moral arguments.

Speaking to Politico on Monday, Dan emphasized that Europe must adopt pragmatic approaches to manage its relationship with Washington, given the Trump administration’s unconventional dealings with the EU. “We shifted from a – in some sense – moral way of doing things to a very pragmatic and economical way of doing things,” he said.

While underscoring the importance of maintaining strong ties with the US, Dan cautioned against attempts at undemocratic interference in European politics. “It would be a problem if the US tried to influence politics undemocratically like the Russians are doing,” he noted.

Dan also commented on the Ukraine crisis, expressing skepticism about the immediate prospects for peace despite Trump’s calls for a ceasefire. He highlighted that the EU’s €90 billion ($106 billion) joint debt loan to Kyiv reinforces Ukraine’s ability to continue fighting and sends a clear message to Moscow that Kyiv will not collapse under pressure.

The Romanian leader praised recent US sanctions on Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil, calling them “extremely powerful” and supportive of Ukraine. He added that any peace deal rewarding the aggressor would threaten Europe’s long-term security, while stressing that the ultimate decision on negotiations rests with Ukraine.
